Hi, this is Amelia. I’m a writer interested in losing.

I think it’s funny that as a prompt for this section of the site, Substack writes: “This page should explain in detail the benefits of reading your publication.”

Everything always has to amount to something!

But okay, what are the benefits of reading this publication? I think I explained this better in my initial post, but in a nutshell: I want this to be a place where losing actually is okay. Where it doesn’t mean that you are a loser.

Like, if this Substack were a competition with prize money and ranking points, the only way you could lose would be by being an asshole, by throwing your tennis racket in an unhinged way, by having no inner life, by leaving no space for the fact that you might be dead wrong about everything.

Even if you’re a very good player—like the number-one ranked athlete—in this (Substack) competition, you would still have to follow these guidelines in order to play. Think of it like Hunger Games for thoughtful people.

May the odds be in your favor but if not, let’s just try and be realistic about it.
